A Survival Guide To Debt by Mitchell Allen - Book review

A Survival Guide To Debt

How To Overcome Tough Times & Restore Your Financial Health

By: Mitchell Allen

Published: August 2009
Format: Paperback, 288 pages
ISBN: 978-1-929774-70-8
Publisher: Greenleaf Book Group

"No matter how bad things are for you right now, don't lose heart", writes debt management counselor and President of Debt Education and Certification Foundation Michell Allen, in his practical and easy to understand guide for taking control of debt A Survival Guide To Debt: How To Overcome Tough Times & Restore Your Financial Health. The author describes the causes of debt problems, how to solve them, and shares solid advice for avoiding reentering the debt trap.

Mitchell Allen is an experienced debt counselor, and understands well how and why people become indebted beyond their means. Instead of placing all of the blame on the person experiencing debt problems, he provides a balanced view of how many factors can cause a personal debt crisis. The author doesn't take the judgmental position that many guides to getting out debt exhibit. Instead, Mitchell Allen demonstrates that debt problems can happen to anyone at any time. Because of that uncertainty, the book contains important sections on recognizing the warning signs of debt problems early, and how to remove the burden of debt either alone or with the assistance of a debt counselor.

Mitchell Allen (photo left) recognizes that there are many ways to reduce, and eventually eliminate all personal debt. Instead of stressing a one solution for all cases single mindedness, the author provides for several ways to end a debt problem. The book has an important section about knowing and understanding your rights when faced by creditors. This information can prevent making a potentially disastrous decision that can derail the debt removal plan. The book's open and honest chapters about personal bankruptcy present it as one of many options. The book isn't just about declaring bankruptcy, but focuses on getting out of debt, taking stock of one;s own personal finances, and then staying out of debt permanently. The author also recognizes that there are valid uses for debt, and explains how to use indebtedness responsibly.

For me, the power of the book is Mitchell Allen's comprehensive approach to understanding the root causes of debt, and how to not only get out debt, but how to remove the specter of debt permanently from one's life. The author takes an even handed approach to debt, with the goal of recognizing a problem, and then developing a workable solution. The sections of the book that discuss the rights of the debtor and creditor, as well as the important chapters on bankruptcy are especially good. The book also contains an important section on staying out of debt. The chapters on assessing one's own personality and attitude toward debt, along with establishing a clear picture of the household personal finances, are very helpful. Once the personal financial situation and goals are established, a strong financial plan that includes a saving plan, can be put into place.

I highly recommend the essential guide to getting out and staying out of debt A Survival Guide To Debt: How To Overcome Tough Times & Restore Your Financial Health by Mithcell Allen, to anyone who is experiencing the dark cloud of debt overhanging their lives. This book will provide the road map to removing that burden of debt, regardless of its cause, and help to establish a stronger financial base for you and your family.

Read the must read book A Survival Guide To Debt: How To Overcome Tough Times & Restore Your Financial Health by Mitchell Allen, and take control of your personal finances. Instead of being trapped on the debt treadmill, this book will empower you to regain your financial help, and move forward to a much stronger and more rewarding financial future.

The Fearless Factor by Jacqueline Wales - Book review

The Fearless Factor

Overcome the Fears, Doubts, and Anxieties That Stop You From Being Your Best Self Now

By: Jacqueline Wales

Published: 2009
Format: Paperback, 341 pages
IBSN: 0979859816
Publisher: Turning Point Press

"This book is the journey of self-discovery that led me into the jungle of my own life", writes motivational speaker Jacqueline Wales in her inspirational and deeply personal book The Fearless Factor: Overcome the Fears, Doubts, and Anxieties That Stop You From Being Your Best Self Now. The author uses the metaphor of the jungle effectively in describing the difficult, often dark and labyrinthine journey to navigate the twists and turns within a person's own mind.

Jacqueline Wales understands the feeling of fear, and the sense of hopelessness that such a powerful and often very irrational emotion can engender for a person. She lived through fear, and paralysis of action that fear can evoke, rendering her unable to cope with life. She made the empowering decision to not only accept the reality of fear, but to use that fear to drive her life forward to greater achievement. The key for Jacqueline Wales was to take positive action, and she describes in powerful language how other women can take control of their own lives as well. Indeed, the message of hope and inner strength is as applicable to men as it is for women. The author's message of overcoming fear and self doubt is a universal one that anyone can embrace to take charge of of their own personal destiny.

Jacqueline Wales (photo left) doesn't write a book that is long on theoretical discussion. Instead, she dives right into the jungle of the mind, with the goal of navigating its dark corners, and discovering the light. By failing to embark upon the voyage of self-discovery, the author believes that a woman is denying herself her full potential for personal fulfillment. Jacqueline Wales has been in the depths of the jungle, and is a wonderful personal guide to its challenges and to its opportunities for personal empowerment. Along the way, she shares the personal journeys of other remarkable women who trekked through the jungles of their own minds and arrived triumphantly at the other side. Those stories of hope serve as a powerful inspiration to other women to strive for their own personal happiness.

For me, the power of the book was the blend of Jacqueline Wales' personal journey as a guide for other women, along with practical and reachable goals for embarking on one's own voyage of self fulfillment. The addition of other women's struggles and personal victories enhance the vision that fears and anxieties can be overcome, as long as a woman recognizes the power of the journey. The author helps the reader to begin to recognize fear as only imagining the worst. She shares advice and assistance for changing that mindset to one of imagining the best and seeing possibilities instead of roadblocks and potential problems. For the author, simply changing the internal language, and becoming one's own best friend, will spark a change in attitude that can change an entire life.

I highly recommend The Fearless Factor: Overcome the Fears, Doubts, and Anxieties That Stop You From Being Your Best Self Now by Jacqueline Wales, to anyone who is struggling with fear and anxiety in their lives. When a person feels that sense of hopelessness, the jungle can indeed be a dark and frightening place. Jacqueline Wales has been in that same location in life, and serves as a personal guide to find the way through the fear and into a more happy and personally empowered life.

Read The Fearless Factor: Overcome the Fears, Doubts, and Anxieties That Stop You From Being Your Best Self Now by Jacqueline Wales, and begin your own person journey to ridding yourself of fear and negativity. Instead of letting those draining, and debilitating emotions rule your life, discover how to banish them forever. Take control of your life, and turn that dark jungle into a beautiful vista of hope and happiness.

When Everything Changed by Gail Collins - Book review

When Everything Changed

The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present

By: Gail Collins

Published:October 14, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 480 pages
ISBN: 9780316059541
Publisher: Little, Brown & Company

"Then, suddenly, everything changed. The cherished convictions about women and what they could do were smashed in the lifetime of many of the women living today", writes New York Times editorial page editor, and the first woman to hold the position, Gail Collins in her monumental, landmark book When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present. The author chronicles the women's rights movement from the 1960s to the present day, describing both the triumphs and often tragic setbacks of countless courageous women, as they fought for gender equality.

Gail Collins provides a powerful and deeply personal narrative, that brings the often divisive issues surrounding the women's movement, to life. Real people, facing very real and often life threatening discrimination on the basis of gender, race, or both fill the pages of this important book. For many young men and women today, the real events described in the book might seem like ancient history. They are not. Discrimination against women, in occupations, education, the military, politics, and in their personal lives has happened very recently. Gail Collins points out that many of the issues raised by the women's movement are still unresolved today. Indeed, many of the hard won victories of early feminists can still be overturned or rolled back.

Gail Collins (photo left) recognizes that the women's rights movement is still going on today, with women facing ever more challenges, both at home and in the workplace. From the early 1960s, when the movement for gender equality was both part of, and separate from the struggle for racial equality, the author describes vivid examples of women risking their reputations, their careers, and even their lives in the quest for equality for all people. Many of the fearless women, whose stories of courage are presented in the book paid dearly for their cause. Some of the stories told are heart wrenching in their sadness, while others will have the reader stand up and cheer. All of the women, whose very personal lives are shared with the reader, are to be admired as changers of history. Change is the one constant in America, and these extraordinary women were at the forefront of that change.

For me, the power of the book is in the personal approach taken by Gail Collins, to bring the women and their stories to life. Many of the women, who spearheaded the quest for gender, as well as racial equality, never set out to be heroines. Their goal was often simply acceptance for their abilities as people. Their battles with employers, politicians, some men who failed to recognize the equality of gender, and even with other women, changed society forever. There were many missteps along the way. Some initial victories turned into setbacks, while other tragedies led to astonishing wide reaching societal consensus on women's rights. Gail Collins is clear that the battle is not yet over, and there is much to still be won for women, making the book even more important for readers.

I highly recommend the must read, and sweeping epic of the women's movement When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present by Gail Collins, to anyone seeking a lively, and on the ground examination of a pivotal time in American life. At the beginning of the book, women were seen as being either stay at home wives or restricted to a severely limited number of occupations. By the end of the book, women saw their horizons widened to the point of running for the Presidency of the United States. At the same time, women still face serious challenges with juggling home, family, and career; while continuing to break down barriers that began to crumble slowly decades ago.

Read the astonishing and eye opening book When Everything Changed: The Amazing Journey of American Women from 1960 to the Present by Gail Collins, and discover the many courageous women who led the struggle for gender equality. Their triumphs and tragedies will stay with the reader long after the book is completed. At the same time, the reader will gain an entirely new perspective on the women's rights movement, and the extraordinary women who were part of that often perilous journey toward gender equality.

Six Pixels Of Separation by Mitch Joel - Book review

Six Pixels of Separation

Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone

By: Mitch Joel

Publoshed: September 7, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 304pp
ISBN-13: 9780446548236
ISBN: 0446548235
Publisher: Business Plus

"In the digital world there are no degrees of separation between you and your customers", writes online marketing expert and President of Twist Image, Mitch Joel, in his essential guide to the new media landscape Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone. The author describes how to build a successful business online through building trust, communicating in an authentic voice, and providing real value for the customer.

Mitch Joel understands the power of the internet, and how to employ its growing army of new media tools, to build a successful business. The use of free social media, including Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, and YouTube, provide the foundation for creating and developing a profitable enterprise. Surprisingly, for Mitch Joel, the concept of creating and enhancing both a business and a personal brand online is still in its infancy. The concept that everyone is connected to everyone else, and just one click of the computer mouse away, is both empowering and frightening for many business people. The author points out that the value of social media for business is in its slow relationship building process, and in the the exchange of message control for conversation. Such revolutionary concepts are often in conflict with many traditional marketing techniques.

Mitch Joel (photo left) shares many subtle insights int to the nature of the internet connected virtual world. Where other business people may see clutter and disarray, the author finds patterns and the hidden strengths of free social media tools, and the force that Google and the other search engines play in defining your business and personal brand. While offering many practical tips for utilizing the various social media in the best and most effective manner, Mitch Joel also describes the underlying aspects of providing valuable content and for making connections with other people. The author also understands the profound difference between the internet tools as the means, and not the end, in and of themselves. They only provide the platform, while the person using them must communicate effectively and authentically through them with others. Connection with others is the key to success.

For me, the power of the book is Mitch Joel's deep understanding of the still untapped internet business opportunities awaiting the entrepreneur, while recognizing that only through building trust and connections is that possible. The internet is a powerful tool, and it can also be used incorrectly. The various social media sites require patience and participation, and the providing of helpful information. That free sharing of ideas and honest assistance builds trust with others, and helps the business person build an online community of like minded people. Those connections turn into business relationships, while anyone not respecting the necessity of relationship building over time, will fail at internet business. A business or personal brand can be destroyed very quickly, and Google indexes that failure forever.

I highly recommend the insightful and essential internet guide book Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone by Mitch Joel, to anyone seeking to develop and online business, and who wants to do it the right way. Mitch Joel combines the theoretical framework of building on the inherent internet connectedness with proven techniques for developing and enhancing those connections into community. At the same time, the author dispels many myths about the internet, and warns about the pitfalls awaiting an entrepreneur who fails to build trust, be authentic, and to provide value for others.

Read the important and highly practical book Six Pixels of Separation: Everyone Is Connected. Connect Your Business to Everyone by Mitch Joel, and embark on your journey into the crucial, emerging world of the internet. No longer are people looking at the well known adage of six degrees of separation. In the online virtual global village, a person is only one mouse click away. Those six degrees have transformed themselves into six pixels, and that critical insight by author Mitch Joel, is the key that can unlock a successful online business.

The Predictioneer's Game by Bruce Bueno De Mesquita - Book review

The Predictioneer's Game

Using the Logic of Brazen Self-Interest to See and Shape the Future

By: Bruce Bueno De Mesquita

Published: September 29, 2009
Format: Hardcover, 272 pages
ISBN: 978-1-4000-6787-9
Publisher: Random House

"Decision making is the last frontier in which science has been locked out of government and business", writes specialist in policy forecasting and Julius Silver Professor of Politics at New York University Bruce Bueno De Mesquita in his landmark book The Predictioneer's Game: Using the Logic of Brazen Self-Interest to See and Shape the Future. The author provides the theoretical and practical framework, for the successful application of game theory in government and business policy planning, to forecast in advance a policy's eventual outcome.

Bruce Bueno De Mesquita turns the seeming mysteries of game theory mathematics into easy to understand policy development tools. Because game theory is about how people compete with one another, while acting in their own self interest, the author demonstrates how game theory can predict outcomes of events. At the same time, that understanding of how people will behave, can be used effectively to create a more satisfactory result for all concerned. When the science of game theory is utilized, it allows decision makers to take a more objective and strategic approach to solving problems. By recognizing the motivation, relative power, and desired result of the other decision makers involved, the policy maker can examine the issue from the opponents' point of view. That insight can help the policy maker anticipate moves in advance and create outcomes that take those possible counter moves into account.

Bruce Nueno De Mesquita (photo left) takes the power of computer modeled game theory beyond simply understanding how events will occur in the real world. Instead, the author proposes game theory as a basis for engineering suitable outcomes that reduce risk of war and conflict. In business game theory applications, understanding the true desires of the people involved, will provide a more effective and satisfactory solution to the problem. The use of game theory in settling lawsuits, in a way that benefits all of the interested parties, is outlined in the book through a case study. In international relations, Bruce Bueno De Mesquita provides powerful examples of how game theory forecast event outcomes well in advance of their actual timing. At the same time, the author provides some potential scenarios where game theory can create a workable solution, that is self reinforcing, for several seemingly unsolvable issue in international relations.

For me, the power of the book is the recognition that people, whether in business, legal or political settings, will always act in their own self interest. That insight, that people are much the same everywhere in the world, provides a firm foundation for utilizing game theory computer models to predicting events before they ever happen in real time. The author also recognizes that game theory, as demonstrated by the well known Prisoner's Dilemma game, takes a rather dim view of human nature. Precisely because people will act in what they believe is their best interest, game theory can predict accurately how the various stakeholders will behave in any given set of circumstances. That knowledge can be used reliably by the policy makers to develop a course of action that will create a positive outcome because people will take the action that they feel is best for themselves.

I highly recommend the fascinating and definite must read book The Predictioneer's Game: Using the Logic of Brazen Self-Interest to See and Shape the Future by Bruce Nueno De Mesquita, to anyone seeking to understand the reasoning behind the use of game theory to predict events. For anyone in government, law, business, politics or academia, the ability within the game theory modeling algorithm to forecast the future through understanding of human self interest, is a powerful tool with unlimited applications. The self reinforcing aspect of the mathematical models, because people do compete and act in their own interest, can be used to create workable and beneficial results in a wide variety of domestic and international situations.

Read the revolutionary policy decision making book The Predictioneer's Game: Using the Logic of Brazen Self-Interest to See and Shape the Future by Bruce Nueno De Mesquita, and put the power of mathematical game theory to use in all aspects of government, business, and law. The author demonstrates how to predict the probability of accounting fraud, how to get the best deal on a car, and how to create a win-win result in a lawsuit. These are only a few of the powerful uses of game theory. The applications are endless, and bounded only by our imagination. Become a predictioneer, and predict or even create event outcomes before they happen. This book is the guide you need to perhaps even change the world.
